Klettersteige north of the Alps

Every via ferrata in Switzerland you can simply walk up to and climb — no guide, no ticket, no gate — outside Ticino and the south-facing valleys. 62 routes, each with the drive from Bergdietikon and the walk in and walk out spelled out, because the cable car is optional and the legs are not.

Scope. All of Switzerland except Ticino, the Valais valleys south of the Rhône, and the Italian-facing Graubünden valleys (Bergell, Misox, Puschlav, Val Müstair). Guide-only routes, ticketed ferrata parks and commercial canyon courses are excluded. Where a lift exists it is named, and the on-foot alternative is given wherever one is practical.

The Bänderweg up the Rigi's north-west rib — three short rock steps and flower-covered ledges to the summit, well away from the cog-railway crowds. The key pitch is a steep 40 m nagelfluh band rigged with a 'pearl chain': steel cable threaded with plastic balls every 10 cm.

Approach. 30 min from Seebodenalp (1020 m), reached by a narrow road up from Küssnacht am Rigi; parking CHF 8 / 24 h

Descent. 1 h 15 back down to Seebodenalp, or continue to Rigi Kulm and take the cog railway

Lift. None needed — road to Seebodenalp (a cable car from Küssnacht also serves it)

Not really a via ferrata. There is no continuous cable to clip into and a set is not needed — the pearl chain actively makes clipping awkward. Graded T5− as an alpine walk. Practically unwaymarked, and the steep grass is dangerous when wet.
